What We Do
At GW Nutrition we have developed a patented food processing technology that utilizes a proprietary light delivery system to reduce microbial contamination, while simultaneously moderating the sensory profile (flavor, odor and color) of alternative proteins.
Our Mission
At GW Nutrition our mission is to improve the flavor, odor, and color of alternative proteins making them easier to be adopted in the food industry.
Our Values
1. Have fun growing the business and our team
2. Promote alternative proteins for improved nutrition
3. Build mutually beneficial partnerships
Diversity and Inclusion: Our Foundation for Innovation
We embrace diversity and inclusion in a serious way. We are committed to building a team with a variety of backgrounds, skills, and views. The more inclusive we are, the better our work will be. Creating a culture of equality isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s also the smart thing.

Meet Our Team

Stephen J Welch
President & CEO
I served as President & CEO of an international company with over 30 years of experience serving the pharmaceutical, veterinary vaccine, diagnostics, life science research, and nutraceutical industries. Under my leadership, the company achieved significant growth and earned a strong reputation as an industry leader. I was instrumental in the development of world-class manufacturing facilities in both Iowa and New Zealand, driving operational excellence and supporting global expansion. My career has spanned multiple sectors, where I consistently applied strategic insight to improve efficiency, fuel innovation, and open new market opportunities. Outside of work I enjoy time with my family and my first Grandson, being outdoors maintaining the landscaping of our home, golfing, and serving on the board for nonprofit organizations.

Laura Wonderling
Director of R&D
I have a Ph.D. in microbiology and have worked in R&D for 23 years with a focus on human and animal health and nutrition. I have over 10 years of leadership experience and enjoy mentoring young scientists to excel in product development and reach their career goals. I am excited to be part of the entrepreneurial team at GW Nutrition, and to help create sustainable ingredients that reduce the environmental impact of food production. Outside of work, I enjoy strategy games and puzzles, reading about new scientific discoveries, and spending time with family and friends.

Michael Peterson
Director of Engineering
I am a mechanical engineer specialized in the design, analysis, and testing of thermal and fluid systems. I come to GWN from the spaceflight industry where I spent 10 years developing thermal and environmental control systems for various human-rated spacecrafts. Prior to that, I spent 4 years designing and testing industrial refrigeration equipment. I am eager to dive into the unique technical challenges at GWN, and to be part of an innovative team pioneering novel solutions to address those challenges. I love spending my personal time with my wonderful wife and our energetic toddler, but I also enjoy tinkering with electronics, working on our vehicles, and hiking.

Megan Roberts
Research Scientist
After I received my bachelor’s in microbiology in May 2020 from Iowa State University, I gained experience in a variety of industries from agriculture to animal health. Working with GW Nutrition I was able to find my passion for being a part of a small business and a strong sense of community and drive. When I am not at work you can find me spending time with my family, playing cards, and chatting around a fire.

Chris Palmer
Operations Manager
I graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 2020, with a double major in Mathematics and Finance. After graduation, I spent almost 3 years working in operations at 4ocean Public Benefit Corporation assisting with everything backhouse. I’m excited for the opportunity to grow and hone my skillset with GW Nutrition, while supporting the team from behind the scenes. Working for a company that makes a difference in the world is very rewarding. I hope that through advancements in our technology, we can help provide more sustainable protein options to areas of need around the world. In my free time I enjoy playing basketball, watching sports, and getting together for board games with friends and family.

Caleb Ragner
Engineer 1
I recently graduated from Iowa State University with a B.A. in Chemical Engineering. My work experience includes two co-ops: one with Ajinomoto in Eddyville, IA and the other with Merck in Elkton, VA. At both plants, I worked in the technical operations sections, gaining valuable experience in the production of various products. I wanted my work to have purpose. At GW Nutrition, I am eager to use my skills and knowledge of food production to help further our technology for a better, healthier future. When I am not at work, I spend most of my time reading, training in martial arts, and spending time with family and friends.
